El sencillo “Enter Sandman”, por la banda Metallica, llegó a su máxima posición el 12 de octubre de 1991. Así, se colocó de #16 de los 100 temas más importantes en Billboard.
El riff principal de la pieza fue creado por Kirk Hammett. Después la canción la terminaron James Hetfield y Lars Ulrich, co-productores del material junto a Bob Rock.
“Enter Sandman” fue el primero de los temas creados para “El Álbum Negro”. No obstante, sería de las últimas en contar con letra, a cargo de James Hetfield.

“Enter Sandman” también fue el sencillo presentación del disco. Además, habría sido la guía del grupo para dar forma a los temas incluidos en la producción.
No estaba prevista para ser sencillo, pero a insistencia de Lars Ulrich terminaría siendo elegido como primero de los cortes. Así, es lo reciben bien tanto la crítica especializada como los seguidores del grupo.
Desde entonces, el tema está presente en el repertorio de los conciertos de la agrupación. Se convirtió en una de las canciones por las que la banda es más reconocida.
Sería el segundo video del grupo, siendo dirigido por Wayne Isham. El primero de los clips de la banda fue “One”. “Enter Sandman” ganó el premio a Mejor Video de Rock Duro, casi un año después de su lanzamiento, en los MTV Video Music Awards 1992 (en setiembre).
