La banda británica The Clash lanzó su álbum “London Calling” el 14 de diciembre de 1979, por el que serían mundialmente reconocidos. Es el tercero de los álbumes de la agrupación, siendo considerado como uno de los más importantes de su discografía. Fue publicado por el sello CBS y distribuido por Epic records.
El disco fue producido por el guitarrista y cantante Mick Jones junto a Guy Stevens. El material también incorporó a su característico estilo punk-rock otros sonidos, expandiendo su rango musical. Así, incluyeron elementos de ska, reggae, blues y hasta jazz (saxofón incluido).
Por su parte, las letras trataron en especial acerca de temas sociales. El material fue registrado justamente en Londres por Joe Strummer (voz, guitarra, piano), Mick Jones (guitarra, piano, voces), Paul Simonon (bajo, voces) y Topper Headon (batería).
Al parecer para el disco la banda no tenía canciones preparadas antes de comenzar con las sesiones, por bloqueo creativo, teniendo problemas para hacer nuevas. Así, decidieron tocar covers de un gran rango de estilos, lo que habría influido en la ecléctica gama de estilos que tendría el nuevo material.

Después, conforme pasó el tiempo fueron dando forma a nuevos temas que ampliarían los elementos y sonidos de la banda. Los músicos se habrían sentido tan cómodos en las sesiones del disco que llegaron a un repertorio de 19 temas, en su mayoría escritos por Strummer y Jones.
Por ello, tuvieron canciones suficientes para lanzar un álbum doble, a lo que su disquera se habría negado inicialmente. Luego aceptaría publicar 2 discos. No obstante, aparentemente iban a dejar uno de los temas para una edición especial que finalmente fue parte del tiraje normal.

La duración del “London Calling” está por encima de los 65 minutos. En el álbum además se incluyó la primera canción creada por Paul Simonon: “The Guns of Brixton”. También fue la primera cantada por el bajista de The Clash.
El primero de los sencillos extraídos del álbum fue “Londong Calling”. El tema también es el que abre el disco. Además, se convertiría en un clásico del rock y se ubicó entre los 20 sencillos más importantes en las listas del Reino Unido.

La producción fue bien recibida tanto por la crítica como por el público. El mítico trabajo también contiene los sencillos “Clampdown” y “Train In Vain”. Por sus ventas y popularidad, el álbum llegó al Top 10 de los listados del Reino Unido.
El material se completa, en el primero de los discos con “Brand New Cadillac”, “Jimmy Jazz”, “Hateful”, “Rudie Can’t Fail”, “Spanish Bombs”, “The Right Profile”, “Lost in the Supermarket” y “The Guns of Brixton”.
El segundo disco contiene además “Wrong ‘Em Boyo”, “Death or Glory”, “Koka Kola”, “The Card Cheat”, “Lover’s Rock”, “Four Horsemen”, “I’m Not Down” y “Revolution Rock” (original de Danny Ray and the Revolutionaries).
El álbum doble vendió más de 5 millones de copias y, por su parte, es considerado como uno de los grandes discos de rock de la historia. “London Calling” fue calificado como uno de los 10 álbumes más grandiosos de todos los tiempos por Rolling Stone.

En el disco “London Calling” se incluye el tema “Spanish Bombs”, que puede resultar interesante por su letra. La canción contiene frases en español, como podría ser aludido por su título. Además, el tema habla de la “Guardia Civil” y de “bombas en la Costa Rica”.
