Songs of Experience es álbum de la veterana banda irlandesa U2, lanzado el primero de diciembre del 2017.
El esperado material fue el décimo cuarto disco de estudio de la agrupación encabezada por el carismático cantante Bono. La producción consta de 13 temas originales creados por la banda. Tiene un tiempo total por encima de los 50 minutos de duración. Fue publicado por el sello tradicional del cuartero, Island. La disquera es distribuida por Universal Music.
El primero de los cortes del disco fue “You’re the Best Thing About Me”. El tema fue lanzado por U2 el 6 de setiembre del 2017. Luego debutó en la lista de Hot Rock Songs de Billboard el 23 de setiembre (de #11). Además, el sencillo de presentación del trabajo llegó a su máxima posición (el lugar #5) la semana siguiente.

Para el disco “Songs of Innocence” la banda irlandesa estuvo acompañada por varios productores. Así, contaron con el aporte de Jacknife Lee y Ryan Tedder (de One Republic) con Steve Lillywhite, Andy Barlow, Danger Mouse y Paul Epworth. En la grabación, además, habrían participado The Chainsmokers, Haim, Lady Gaga y Julian Lennon (los últimos aportando coros).
La portada del disco sería una imagen captada por Anton Corbijn. El fotógrafo y director, además, ha sido colaborador del cuarteto en buena parte de su historia. En la fotografía realizada por Corbijn se apreciaría a Eli y Sean agarrándose la mano. El hijo de Bono el primero. La hija de The Edge la segunda. El nombre del álbum, así como del anterior, habría sido tomado de la colección de poemas de William Blake “ Songs of Innocence and of Experience”.
El material sería la continuación de su anterior trabajo, “Songs of Innocence”, publicado por la banda el 9 de setiembre del 2014. Ese disco se enfocaría a tópicos de la juventud, con experiencias de los integrantes de la agrupación y su niñez en Irlanda, así como experiencias personales y emotividad de esa época.

Prácticamente recién salido ese álbum, el grupo anunció “Songs of Experience”. Inicialmente se tenía previsto que la siguiente entrega se publicaría posiblemente un año después. No obstante, U2 decidió tomarse más tiempo para trabajar el material. Por lo tanto pudo modificar letras, aparentemente para darle un tono más político.
Las letras del disco “Songs of Innocence” estarían influenciadas por una etapa en que el cantante estuvo especialmente consciente de la mortalidad. A eso también se habría unido particularmente un consejo acerca el enfoque de líricas que le diera el poeta irlandés Brendan Kennelly… Entonces Bono buscó seguir su consejo: “escribe como si estuvieras muerto”, que al cantante le habría gustado.
U2 – American Soul
El estilo de la producción realizado por la veterana banda se enmarca en la sencillez sonora. También con arreglos que buscan acentuar sus temas. No se encontraría magnificencia ni piezas épicas, pero sí canciones que relejan la experiencia de una banda con 40 años en el ruedo. Además, con mesura y expresividad musical, con frescura y actualidad.

El segundo corte del álbum “Songs of Experience” sería “Get Out of Your Own Way”. El tema fue interpretado por el grupo en vivo en el Trafalgar Square, durante la entrega anual de los premios musicales MTV de Europa (MTV EMA), realizada el anterior 12 de noviembre. Para el evento los seguidores podían votar por sus artistas favoritos nominados en las diferentes categorías.
U2 – Get Out Of Your Own Way
Entonces el contenido lírico del material giraría en torno a la vida y la muerte, con los contrastes del mundo actual. Así, dejando la esencia a la que aludiría justamente el título de la pieza que abre el disco… Un tema que posiblemente fue elegido por el grupo como el arranque en este viaje de “canciones de experiencia”: “Amor es Todo lo que Dejamos”.
