El tema “Hotel California”, lanzado por Eagles llegó al primer lugar en Estados Unidos el 7 de mayo de 1977. Así, ocupó la cúspide entre los temas más importantes según Billboard. El sencillo estaría por 19 semanas dentro del conteo. Se convirtió en uno de los más exitosos del grupo y posiblemente también el más reconocido de su catálogo.
El sencillo alcanza la cima después de 10 semanas en la lista. De esa forma fue el cuarto #1 del grupo en Billboard. En tanto, la canción llegaría al cuarto lugar en el Reino Unido. Además, para el 2009 lograría ventas por encima del millón de unidades en descargas digitales.
La pieza fue creada por el guitarrista Don Felder. Luego la letra fue escrita por Glenn Frey y, especialmente, Don Henley. Este último fue el principal cantante del tema, al que dio su título de trabajo “Mexican Reggae” debido a su sonido. Además, Joe Walsh propuso el característico dúo de guitarras con el que cierra. Ese segmento, tocado por Walsh Felder, es considerado por muchos guitarristas uno de los mejores solos de la historia.
No obstante la cantidad de interpretaciones variadas acerca del significado de la letra, para Henley en realidad es sencilla. Es acerca del exceso de la cultura americana y, también, de chicas conocidas del baterista y cantante. El tema daría nombre al disco donde se incluiría, con The Beverly Hills Hotel en su portada, representando su título.
