El 3 de mayo de 1986 el sencillo “Addicted to Love” de Robert Palmer llega al primero de los sitios del Hot 100 de Billboard. Así, el tema original del intérprete birtánico estaría 22 semanas en lista. Además, sería su tema más exitoso en la lista de los temas más importantes en Estados Unidos.
Fue el tercero de los sencillos que se extrajeron del álbum “Riptide”. El material había sido lanzado a finales del año anterior, llegando a convertirse poco después en uno de los trabajos más conocidos del cantante, autor, músico y productor. Salió como corte del disco en enero de 1986, luego llegando a considerarse su canción más característica.
Ingresó a la lista de Estados Unidos poco después, el 8 de febrero de ese año. Así, estaría 22 semanas dentro de la lista y sería el tema más exitoso del catálogo del artista. También entraría en el conteo de Top Rock de Billboard. Además, sería uno de los últimos sencillos publicados en acetato de 45 revoluciones por minuto en recibir el certificado de disco de Oro, al superar el millón de copias vendidas.

Originalmente la pieza estaba planeada para ser un dueto con Chaka Khan. No obstante, el sello de la cantante no le autorizó participar en el material. Así, que finamente el británico lo interpretó en su totalidad. Por su parte, la guitarra prinicipal la toca Andy Taylor. El músico, conocido al ser miembro de Duran Duran, también sería parte del proyecto The Power Station con Palmer.
El video del tema, además, se volvería icónico. Entonces Robert Palmer aparecería rodeado de modelos que estaban de moda luciendo similares. Así, lucían como maniquíes. Mientras tanto ellas se mostraban tocando los instrumentos. Es considerado desde entonces comop uno de los clips más destacados de los 80s.
